About Us

The Pathogen Genomics and Bioinformatics Center (PGBC) is a collaborative initiative between the Tigray Health Research Institute (THRI) and Mekelle University. Established in 2025, PGBC serves as a center of excellence for advanced research in genomics, bioinformatics, and data-driven public health. The center is designed to enhance the region’s capacity for disease surveillance, outbreak response, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) monitoring, and biomedical innovation through cutting-edge genomic science.

Background and Establishment

PGBC was formally launched on March 31, 2025, following a strategic collaboration between THRI and Mekelle University. The center emerged in response to the growing need for localized genomic infrastructure and bioinformatics capacity in Tigray, particularly in light of public health challenges such as emerging infectious diseases, AMR, and the need for precision public health tools.
