Welcome to the Pathogen Genomics and Bioinformatics Center (PGBC), a collaborative initiative between Tigray Health Research Institute (THRI) and Mekelle University. Officially launched on March 31, 2025, the center serves as a regional hub for advanced research in genomics and bioinformatics, aimed at strengthening public health, accelerating disease surveillance, and fostering scientific innovation in Tigray and beyond.
Our MissionTo harness the power of genomics and data science to improve health outcomes, detect and control infectious disease threats, and build sustainable bioinformatics capacity in the region.
Our VisionTo become a center of excellence in pathogen genomics and bioinformatics, contributing to scientific discovery, regional resilience, and global health security.
Our ServicesPGBC offers a range of specialized services designed to support research, surveillance, and innovation in the fields of genomics and bioinformatics:
We provide whole genome and targeted sequencing for pathogens, microbiomes, and environmental samples. Our laboratory and data pipelines support outbreak investigation, antimicrobial resistance monitoring, and high-resolution genomic profiling.
We develop and manage secure, scalable systems for genomic data storage, sharing, and integration with public health and research platforms. We also support the development of databases, dashboards, and visualization tools tailored to user needs.
Our team offers custom bioinformatics solutions—from genome assembly and annotation to advanced data analytics, machine learning applications, and interactive data visualization—to turn complex biological data into actionable insights.
We deliver practical training programs in genomics and bioinformatics, support internships and fellowships, and work closely with academic and research partners to co-develop and implement high-impact genomic research projects.
